PROJECT: MODERNIST REINVENTION

This 1960s house in Berkhamsted was modernised and enlarged, with a garage conversion and part two-storey rear extension. Care was taken to enhance the existing architectural character of the property, with striking lines and a mixture of volumes expressed in similar materials to the originals. Windows were introduced on all four aspects, with further rooflights, to create bright spaces that are layered to allow views across and to the outside. The interior was a play on the same period, using vibrant accent colours to tie each room together. Finally, its steep hillside setting was addressed with an elevated driveway and some terracing to connect it to the garden below.
